Cupcake love.    Cupcakes seem to be quite polarizing.  I come across people often who say, "What's your deal with cupcakes?  There are so many better types of dessert out there."  To which I respond, "How can you not love cupcakes?  They're cake and they're frosting and their portioned just right."    I agree that there are lots of delicious desserts out there.  But I also fully agree that cupcakes are delicious.    If they're good.   ...

Typically once a year I believe the lies and find myself making a muffin batter that promises to taste just like a donut.  In this case it promised to taste just like a krispie kreme.  This became utterly suspect as I was making them and noticed the inclusion of nutmeg and cinnamon in the batter.  Have you ever noticed a hint of spice in a kk donut?  I surely haven't.   In case you were wondering, these AREN'T krispie kreme donuts.  They aren't remotely like one. &n...

In my house, we don't pack the pumpkin away til after Christmas.  Anything pumpkin goes from mid October until December 25th.  So don't go telling me this isn't a perfect Christmas dinner dessert!    It's luscious, it's over-the-top indulgent just like a Christmas dinner finish should be ... about three hours after dinner when your stomach has had time to digest a little.    The cake is forgivingly moist, as most things pumpkin are.  And that coffee swiss merin...

Help!  Thanksgiving is over.  The pumpkin cans are in the trash can and here I am offering new versions.  This season passed me by way too quickly.  I haven't completed near all of my Fall cooking and activities and here we started decorating the house for Christmas yesterday.  And I'm realizing that having a baby born on December 8th is just going to send us to a whole other level of crazy town each year!  I just threw out my Thanksgiving week planning list and now...

I have this deficiency.   I'm always telling myself, "Simplify, simplify, simplify."  And so I plan a gathering and tell myself to keep it simple.  That everyone doesn't need to eat five pounds of food.  But then inevitably, about an hour before the doorbell starts to ring, I start thinking, "What is we don't have enough brats?  Twelve guests, 24 brats.  What if it isn't enough?  What is we don't have enough s'mores?  Two bags of marshmallows but what...

Shortly after arriving in Chicago, when my friend Em realized I'd be living without an oven for the first three weeks, she made a statement.  You are not spending the summer in Chicago without making me some cupcakes.  Her cupcake supply had greatly diminished with my move followed by a co-worker's job change. I made no promises, laughing it off, because I didn't have an oven and didn't know how all of our house moves were going to go.  But I didn't forget that challenge.   I...

Vanilla Latte Cupcakes.  Absolutely ho-hum.  Good enough to take to a Super Bowl party but not good enough to make again.  But the frosting?  The Vanilla Espresso Swiss Meringue Buttercream frosting?  THAT is what saved the cupcake.         So don't let me tell you what to use it on.  Just find something to put it on top of.  Like ... your finger.  Or your tongue.  Or okay, maybe a better cupcake.   And if you find yourself gi...

Happy Birthday to ME!  Oh yes, this cake was.     I always want the perfect birthday cake, but most years I'm hemming and hawing three days before, not sure which cake will top last years.  This year, I saw this cake MONTHS before my birthday, tagged it, and knew it was the one to request from my mom and sister on the big day.   I wasn't disappointed.       "Too rich" doesn't really exist for me.  This was rich, rich, rich and I loved it!  I love...

Since Eden's birth Canaan has had to spend a lot more time indoors.  His usual park time has been cut due to a napping baby and the return of the rainy season.  I figured making muffins together might be a good hour of amusement for my energetic little boy.     I was all set to make just some ordinary streusel muffins when I remembered I had tagged this recipe long ago.  What little boy wouldn't have fun dipping (and licking) the chocolate topping and sprinkles?   &...

Too, too long.  This is a recipe that I took way too long to make.  I couldn't quite figure out if this was a cake or if this was a coffee cake, as in breakfast-fare, so I never knew the perfect opportunity to serve it.  There was a frosting, which made me think dessert but the ratio of cake ingredients seemed dense like a coffee cake.  And it has coffee in it.   Perfect opportunity or not, we had people coming over, and I had a maid on hand to wash dishes.  Perfect...
