Sometimes you just need something in a festive wrapper.   Sometimes you just need something a little different. A little out of the box.   For me, nuts in my buttercream is certainly out of the box. I'm a big fan of creamy, smooth, unadulterated buttercream. But what is summer for after a long school year if not to try out a recipe that might not become your staple but is worthy of a place at the table? That's exactly how I'd describe this one.       Recipe from Sugary &...

I love a good coffee cake in the morning. Or sometimes at 10 at night. Because coffee cake is pretty satisfying then too.   This one would be perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas morning. Or any morning when you have a few extra minutes and the leaves outside are crunchy brown and orange.       Recipe from Bake or Break. Click HERE for the recipe. I recommend using more chopped pecans than what the recipe calls for. Mine is a bit sparse and I measured what the recipe said. A...

I just love to make cupcakes. I love that they are compact little cakes. I love being able to mound frosting, piling it up high. I especially love when they have a surprise filling inside.   This cupcakes was a total success. Chocolate base that works in high altitude! Rich, smooth frosting and gooey dulce de leche running through.         Recipe from Baker by Nature. Click HERE for recipe. Add new comment...

This cake was a delight. Unexpectedly. The vanilla pound cake couldn't be more perfect and I kept wanting to make the creme-holes bigger just so that I could eat more crumbs as I worked.    And the creme is delicious as well. I didn't add so much as to overwhelm. Instead it was just enough to add this extra surprise flavor and to create some soaked, gooshy areas that hit the spot.       My friend Carol, whose birthday we were celebrating, is a nutritionist and eats almos...

Festivity. Even sitting in my shorts with my green, green grass outside this cake can make me feel just like Christmas. The gorgeous ruby Christmas color. The tangy cranberries we don't often eat fresh any other time of the year.    This coffee cake is about as simple as homemade can get with just five ingredients. And isn't that just what you want in the midst of the present wrapping, nightly events, frantic cookie decorating? So take a load off for a minute. Practice being present ov...

I warned you that the bundts might be coming in abundance. It's like a turned my kitchen into 1973!   This cake tasted a little bit like summer in a bottle. Strawberry and citrus. Like a tall glass of freshly squeezed lemonade.    Only it's CAKE. Dense, buttery, sweet cake lemonade.     Taken from A Spicy Perspective. Click HERE for the recipe. Add new comment...

Who wouldn't want to make a bundt cake with this cute helper manning the sifter?     This bundt taught me something revolutationary. You see I love a good bundt cake. When they are super buttery and have just the right crumb there is no need for a thick frosting. But I often don't make bundt cakes because well, have you ever tried to unstick a stuck bundt cake? There's just no coming back from it sometimes. I've had to turn more than one bundt into what we will call a cake "mountain" o...

It's been awhile since I've made a cupcake. Long enough that the colorful liners are piling up in my cupboards. But my husband and best friend in Quito don't particularly like cupcakes. Crazy, right?   This is a cupcake I made on a sunny, summer day in Idaho ... though there is nothing summery about this cupcake. It's dense and rich and heavy. Really top heavy! Just the way I like it.     This isn't your classic cupcake with a fluffy mound of frosting on top. It's kind of a c...

Do you have a day? Just an extra day to do what you want. No deadlines, no big commitments? (I know, how often do those happen?)   Well just in case you do, I suggest this might be a cake for that day. A day when you can slowly and methodically make the batter and line the baking sheets. When you can make your salted caramel from scratch. When you can portion out frosting into three separate colors and frost to your hearts delight.      Don't we all wish we had a day to let t...
