Do you have a day? Just an extra day to do what you want. No deadlines, no big commitments? (I know, how often do those happen?)   Well just in case you do, I suggest this might be a cake for that day. A day when you can slowly and methodically make the batter and line the baking sheets. When you can make your salted caramel from scratch. When you can portion out frosting into three separate colors and frost to your hearts delight.      Don't we all wish we had a day to let t...

You know when you are at a birthday party and you see a beautiful cake and you can't wait to eat it? ... And then you find out it's carrot cake. Well truth be told I find that really disappointing. If I want birthday cake I want it to be rich and chocolately or totally vanilla. But not filled with carrots. Of course, I'll eat it but it's just not my favorite.       Turning this into a coffee cake, though, is just brilliant because first thing in the morning I'm not demanding the l...

THIS cake was what birthday dreams are made of ... and then what New Year's dreams are made of too when you just keep eating it for every meal the following day. (I know, I know it's about 9 months past my birthday and I've been keeping one of the best cakes I've ever had secret.)     The chocolate cake is now my go-to base. It's dense and over-the-top moist and pure chocolate. But it's that toasted marshmallow filling that just kills me. In all the best ways. As long as you are patien...

THIS is a salad favorite that came straight from my head. I mean, there was a recipe for some sort of salad something or other but it was one of those days when I hadn't grocery shpoped correctly and was missing ingredients. And then as I subbed in for those missing items, I thought of other items that would be delish and before I knew it, I had a completely different salad.   A totally tasty salad.   Hearty and filling, chock full of veg and flavor, a exture explosion.     &...

Picking my very favorite classic pie is one of the easier food questions you could ask me. French Silk. Hands down. Every time. The richness. The silky smooth texture. The flaky crust. I dig it all.   I also really dig homemade ice cream. A whole bunch.     Sometimes a recipe like this comes along and totally doesn't live up to it's name. Like "cinnamon roll oatmeal." I mean, adding cinnamon to your oatmeal does NOT transform it into anything resembling the real thing! But this ic...

About six years ago I tried this recipe from Smitten Kitchen for Pumpkin Swirl Brownies. There was many a skeptic when I mentioned these brownies. "Pumpkin? With chocolate? Gross." It turns out they were quite delicious though. Sensationally rich but totally delicious.  So pumpkin with chocolate hazelnut? All the better. Bring it on!           It turns out though that there can really be too much of a good thing, at least to me. Don't get me wrong. This pie was good...

Another totally delicious, totally satisfying party cake. The kids and I made this mini-cake just for fun and boy were we glad we did! Look at that imperfect dipped center! Look how much nutella buttercream we were able to cram in there! Pretty sweet.   I loved everything about this cake and if I could snap my fingers and make it appear in my lunchbox today I'd do it! Moist chocolate, rich nutella flavor. Perfect indulgence.       Chocolate Cake with Nutella But...

If you are looking for a party cake but don't have the energy to come up with an elaborate design, this is a fairly uncomplicated one. It has great visual appeal and didn't take all day to make. This showed up at my friend Christine's birthday and once the first piece was cut it was gone in about 4 minutes flat. Of course that might have had something to do with the 30 people in the room!    It's a basic (good) chocolate cake. The peanut butter is subtle as it doesn't use as much ...

I can't really call this a recipe. But it is a recipe for success with toddlers! A perfect after school treat where you open the back door and let them drip and slurp in the backyard ... with a strict rule that they will not be entering the house again before a big wipe down.     Take your favorite Greek yogurt (I use plain with absolutely not a hint of sugar but some of your littles might be accustomed to something sweeter) and smooth it into an even layer on a parchment covere...

Anything that claims to be "like a waffle" but is not, is NOT. Let's just start there. I learned this years ago after several attempts at trying doughnut muffins and baked doughnuts. They are muffins, not doughnuts. So as long as the expectation is clear then we'll be okay.   These aren't doughnuts. They are slightly crunchier waffles. Which means they are good ... all covered in glazy-goodness. But they aren't doughnuts. So don't even think about thinking that's what you are getting.  ...
