Since we would be in Quito the whole summer, we thought it would be a good chance to sign the kids up for an extracurricular we don't have time for during the school year. Eden was adamant about starting ballet but it was harder to figure out what Canaan might want to do since he is not very into sports so far. When I saw the flyer for this 3-week music theater camp it seemed perfect. It was in Spanish, a major plus, and it involved rehearsing and putting on a show while learning music theory. H...

Canaan has had quite a bit of transition this year. His teacher, Mrs. Quiroz started in the classroom 80% of the time because she was still on her lactation leave. She came back full-time around Christmas. Then Canaan's classroom aide was let go so they were given a new aide. (He loved Mr. Samuel, his new aid!) Because Mrs. Quiroz was pregnant again, she left a month early to give birth and Canaan finished his year with a student teacher from Germany, Ms. Steup. Fortunately he is a flexible litt...

Career Day in Kindergarten. They each had to make a board showing the various aspects of their chosen profession. Canaan studied hard what it means to be a veterinarian. He loves animals so it was a good pick! He surprised me with how shy he was to answer people's questions about his profession as they milled around. He has had some hip issues, which extreme pain (we think growing pains) that cause him to limp heavily and not be able to walk much. His hip was bad on this day so he c...

This year we gave Canaan the option between a big party with lots of friends at the house or the choice of 4 friends to take to Mr. Joy's. Mr. Joy's is all he can talk about so it was an easy decision. It was also an EASY win for Nate and I. We did almost zero decoration or prep. Nate picked Canaan, Justin, Micah, Mari, and Anapaula up from school where Eden and I were waiting. The kids attacked the slides and guns and pulleys with gusto while Nate and I talked. (I have to say, not having parent...

We have a six year old in the house!! Incredible.  Canaan, you continue to be creative and live life largely and loudly all the time. The teachers in rooms across the hall comment that they can hear your laugh above the rest. You embrace almost anything with gusto, whether it be a simple trip to the local park or a new person. You are really interested in languages, particularly Chinese, and enjoy learning about different types of people, cultures and countries. You are full on fascinated w...

Beyond excited, beyond proud. Picking his clothes out days in advance. This little boy loves to sing and he loves to soak up attention from his parents. I loved watching how much he's grown in the past year. He was more serious as he sang. Instead of watching the kids around him and observing the concert he was right there with them singing earnestly. He was so PROUD of himself.  Afterward we did a nativity project in his classroom and shared cake.       Add new...

Things like Grandparents Day are just a bit tricky for our family. Both our kid's schools do this and we tend to find ourselves scrambling for a "grandparent replacement." This year I asked Canaan who he thought he might want to do this day with him. After realizing that the Browns were in the US he immediately asked for Mr. Sean. I almost burst out laughing because Sean is a friend who is maybe 7 years older than us. He and Canaan haven't spent much time together except when we all play volleyb...

You were no less excited for the start of kindergarten than you were for preschool. You were confident and ready to walk down the hill with me each day. Your teacher is Mrs. Quiroz and your classroom is full of alligators. This year you've got some louder, older voices in your classroom who came from English-speaking homes so you have to fight a bit more for your voice to be heard. Your biggest excitements are about now being full day as you can't wait to eat lunch with your friends and tak...

The Preschool International Food Fair has become a tradition at the AAI. It raises money for our sister school while involving parents and kids in coming together around various cultures. Some families get assigned their culture of origin while others are asked to learn about new cultures. Then each booth sets up and does a morning of mad scooping and feeding as kids come by with plates and pick out the various food samples they want to try. It's actually a really good deal and an event Nate was...
