Canaan's birthday party this year had a pizza theme.  I try to stay as far away from movie characters and other popular themes, particularly since our little guy barely watches tv.  His dad came up with the pizza idea and Canaan was sold ... as long as he got a cupcake at some point.     What seemed like a really simple theme turned less than simple when we realized that we either had to invite his whole preschool class or none at all.  So we invited them all and then di...

Dear Canaan,   My sweet boy, the little guy who turned me into a mom, you turned four this past week.  I can't believe how quick you are growing up and how before I know it you'll be going to school with me every day.     Celebrating your life is very important to me because you are one of two very special gifts God gave to your dad and I!  We talk about your birthday for months before hand.  What started as a request from you for a "vanilla cupcake and a cracker" f...

About four months ago Canaan decided he was a "kitty kat."  If you called him anything other than "Kitty Kat" you were promptly corrected.  Eden, at the time was insisting she was "Chicken Buillon" to anyone who would listen.  But eventually her older brother won out and we found ourselves with two kitty kats.  Which as it turns out, has not been a passing phase.   Putting Canaan to bed involves say "Night night Kitty Kat" to which he responds "Meoow."  Sometimes on...

Canaan has FINALLY learned how to get up out of bed when he needs to go to the bathroom at night and nap times. He has kept his run going for 7 days. So he got his reward. I took him to his first soccer game today. I know, I know, he is almost 4 and this is his first game... take my father of the year award away. But the games are generally played during nap times and when I'm practicing with Cumbre Alta. Today we said screw it and went during nap time.   We had a good time.   Walking ...

Canaan's favorite way to get to preschool since Nate's bike came:           A straight shot of 8 blocks downhill.  All you have to do is squeeze the breaks every once in awhile. Add new comment...

We were such proud parents (as are all, right?) at Canaan's first ever production!  He'd been practicing the songs for months and we noticed that he knew all the words to each group's songs.  Of course the production was ridiculous with kids all over the place, some crying, some overexcited but we loved it just the same.  Our friend Elisa came and that was special for Canaan to feel like he had lots of "family" watching him.  It's maybe the best feeling in the world when your...

We are so glad that we chose Alouette for Canaan.  He loves it so much and we're happy with their focus on outside play and play exploration over pencil to paper activities.  I've never had a morning where he didn't want to.  He jumps out of bed ready.   He looks just like a little Ecuadorian boy in his school sweatpant uniform:             These past few weeks we've been a little more involved at his school.  In early December they celebrat...

Before I get to preschool I would like to note Canaan's latest saying for my records.  (Mostly because even though he doesn't know what he is saying I like hearing it anyway!)  Last week at dinner Canaan said, "Mommy, you are so stylish.  So stylish and so precious."  He got a good reaction so since then most mornings before I leave I hear, "Mommy, you are stylish and precious."  It's a good way to run out the door!  (I mean, where he ever learned the word stylish f...

I'm reading "Raising Your Spirited Child."  So far it's been a really good resource for Cane-boy It highlights some of characteristics that we both love when they are at their best and sometimes throw our arms up about when they aren't!   As do many books, it emphasizes the importance of learning to express emotions with words.  I've gotta say, I think that's one skill Canaan already has down pretty well.  He sure can make me want to laugh with some of his frequent expre...

We are so counter cultural.     We just can't help it.  This scene would be so normal in a suburb in IL.         Here I cringe, thinking how the neighbors glance out their window, catch this site and mutter "Crazy Americans."  But that's what we are and we don't mind letting our kid run around barefoot in his Thomas underwear.     1 comment...
