You were no less excited for the start of kindergarten than you were for preschool. You were confident and ready to walk down the hill with me each day. Your teacher is Mrs. Quiroz and your classroom is full of alligators. This year you've got some louder, older voices in your classroom who came from English-speaking homes so you have to fight a bit more for your voice to be heard. Your biggest excitements are about now being full day as you can't wait to eat lunch with your friends and tak...

The Preschool International Food Fair has become a tradition at the AAI. It raises money for our sister school while involving parents and kids in coming together around various cultures. Some families get assigned their culture of origin while others are asked to learn about new cultures. Then each booth sets up and does a morning of mad scooping and feeding as kids come by with plates and pick out the various food samples they want to try. It's actually a really good deal and an event Nate was...

Being in preschool at AAI, Canaan was able to participate in his very first Spirit Week. Being the extroverted, up for anything little boy that he is, he loved it all! He really loved that he and I both got to dress in similar ways. There was crazy hair day, twin day, nerd day, team color day and more. He also really loved walking to school with his crazy hair because he got to much attention from passersby on the street. He often tells me that he loves when people laugh because of him. On the l...

Canaan started asking for a dinosaur party at least six months before his birthday. When I started poking around I discovered it was a fantastically easy theme to do. He and I had fun looking at pictures and planning what things he would like. It was a beautiful morning and with lots of prep ahead of time, things came together easily the day of. Canaan had a fantastic time with friends, running around in his dinosaur mask and more. He especially liked playing the Dinosaur Stomp (like musical cha...

Blog fail. In doing some photo organization I came across these pictures back from Canaan's preschool graduation - in June 2014. Woops.   So for my records, Canaan had a lovely preschool graduation, complete with a show in which he acted as a monkey in a story, a foam grad cap, and the chance to tell the microphone what preschool he was graduating to. His sister was excited to celebrate with him and the family went out for Corfu ice cream after to celebrate. We were proud of this little guy...

Canaan had his Christmas program with the Early Childhood program. Kinder and pre-k have been practicing all year for this and our little guy comes home singing both his songs and the kinder songs. He was beyond excited to perform and very proud of his part in it all. Eden threw an absolute sob-fest the morning of his program because she wanted to go so bad. But she had her own upcoming program to practice for. Canaan was all smiles and performance and surprised me with how on beat he was when t...

Canaan started preschool 4 on September 1st. (And I started my 4th year at AAI, my first year as Department Chair). He was thrilled to be going to "mommy's school" and excited to visit his classroom. He had met "Miss M" the week before and was a little shy but excited to get to know her. He particularly enjoyed reconnecting with Martina and Lorenzo (from Allouette) in his class. He was talkative and independent, had no trouble separating and only gave us trouble because he wanted to stay when it...

At four we took the safety lock off of Canaan's door and he now has the freedom to come and go from his room.  This led to some really short naps which led to some further training on his new freedoms.  But we've got it down pretty good now.  He wakes up around 5:45 and quietly goes downstairs by himself.  He colors or plays out at his yellow table until the rest of us emerge from getting ready, around 7am.  If he wakes from his nap and Eden is still asleep, he also know...

Recently the kids have taken to saying, "Excuse me, NO! Eden" (and vice versa) whenever they don't like what the other one says.  They've been told this is unkind so they think as long as they use a funny word it's allowed.  Yesterday bickering in the car degenerated to this:   Canaan:  "Excuse me, NO! cupcake" Eden:  "Excuse me, NO! pastel"   This went round about four times and then they started bickering about who was cupcake and who was pastel.  Please remi...

Despite creative, pinterest-inspired activities, Canaan has shown little interest in letters and writing.  I haven't pushed it since he still has lots of time to learn it and he's excited about so many other things!  But a few weeks ago during his solo play time after Eden goes to sleep I just wrote his name on a paper and let him know if he wanted to copy it he could.  He sat by himself at the table and worked.  Here are his first attempts at his name.  For some reason ...
